About
United Way of East Central serves groups and individuals in Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Jones, Linn and Washington counties. In 2008, we raised over $10.4 million and supported 40 agencies which represent 57 human service programs.
Our work is focused on education, income and health in our communities. These are the building blocks that we all need for a good life. Our goal is to create long-lasting changes by addressing the underlying causes of problems.
EDUCATION: Helping children and youth achieve their potential. Children are cared for and prepared to enter school. Young people have the support, opportunities and services they need to prosper and contribute to society.
INCOME: Promoting financial stability and independence. Families have financial stability required to support self-sufficiency.
HEALTH: Improving people's health and access to healthcare. Uninsured and low-income families and older adults have access to healthcare and services in times of crisis.
History United Way of East Central Iowa is in its 94th year of service to our communities. Our organization began in Cedar Rapids in 1914 as the “United Charities Campaign,” a program of the Chamber of Commerce. It was a “one-day only” campaign that raised $21,000 on behalf of four agencies. Since its inception the organization has had several different names and experienced numerous structural changes which have allowed it to grow continue to meet the needs and challenges of our area and the people we serve.
