About

United Way of East Central serves groups and individuals in Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Jones, Linn and Washington counties. In 2007 we raised over $10 million and supported 32 agencies which represent 67 human service programs. United Way strengthens our communities by:
  • Gathering information to identify our communities’ most critical needs
  • Developing resources to support health and human services
  • Working with community groups to create new projects that help more people
Dollars given to United Way of East Central Iowa’s Community Impact Fund are distributed to programs that meet our communities’ most pressing needs. These programs address three key areas: Strengthening Children & Youth; Strengthening Families; and Strengthening Connections.

History
United Way of East Central Iowa is in its 94th year of service to our communities. Our organization began in Cedar Rapids in 1914 as the “United Charities Campaign,” a program of the Chamber of Commerce. It was a “one-day only” campaign that raised $21,000 on behalf of four agencies. Since its inception the organization has had several different names and experienced numerous structural changes which have allowed it to grow continue to meet the needs and challenges of our area and the people we serve.
