Alexis de Tocqueville Society
"United Way is making a difference in our quality of life, every day. I am proud to be part of an organization that has the resources and experience to handle the big issues in our community." - Dick Johnson
The purpose of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society is to foster, promote and recognize the vital importance of voluntary community service and personal giving at an exceptional level. Originally established in 1972 by United Way of America, the Society was named for social historian Alexis de Tocqueville because he greatly admired the “spirit of voluntary association and America’s efforts for the common good.”
United Way recognizes individuals or couples who donate $10,000 annually as members of the de Tocqueville Society. Membership in the Alexis de Tocqueville Society increased in 2006 bringing the total number of members to 27. Their contributions represented over $350,000.
