Food Drive Huge Success
On Saturday, May 9, 2009, letter carriers and volunteers collected food for our local community in the annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Food Drive! The NALC Food Drive occurs across the nation and has been significant in alleviating hunger in America. It is the largest one-day food drive in the Cedar Rapids area. This year’s event collected 55,701 pounds of food in Cedar Rapids, Marion and Anamosa, which was distributed to area food banks.
United Way of East Central Iowa and Union leaders coordinated volunteers at Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP) to sort food into boxes. Dozens of volunteers worked in two-hour shifts from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm.
