Women's Leadership Initiative
"Together, we represent women who are commited to positively influencing the lives of other women—while building valuable relationships that will extend far into the future. We share a passion for giving to our community and to each other.” - Laura Dement
The purpose of the United Way of East Central Iowa Women's Leadership Initiative is to create a powerful leadership network of women who strengthen our community through a focused investment of their time, talent and treasures. When caring women unite, lives improve.
Initiative
The Women's Leadership Initiative, launched in 2006, allows women to see the results of their investments. Members have the option of directing their contribution to a specific focus area created especially for the Women's Leadership Initiative. In its first year we had 42 members, who gave over $35,000. This initiative focuses on promoting healthy lifestyles of women, ages 35 to 55.
Women's Leadership will be working with multiple community partners to further assist in the identification of the underlying causes of women's health problems. To get at the root cause of this community problem, programs and initiatives will focus on prevention, education and awareness.
This initiative is a multi-year commitment to the promotion of women's health and aligns with the results from the Community Assessment. United Way recently conducted the Assessment to measure individuals' perceptions of our communities' most critical needs.
Next Steps
The Women's Leadership Initiative has partnered with Healthy Linn Care Network to administer the program. Healthy Linn will be assisted by the expertise of an advisory council that represent community health representatives. The advisory council will monitor and evaluate program details, goals and objectives.
Goals include:
- Provide training to women, ages 35 to 55, on healthy lifestyle choices
- Coordinate community presentations by health participants
- Increase awareness of the WLI via articles on women's health literacy topics, health fairs, community events
- Identify gaps/areas of need related to women's health and the promotion of healthy lifestyles
- Colloborate with new community partners to engage in women's health strategies
- Identify future volunteer opportunities
Join Women's Leadership! This year, we plan to recruit 30 active, caring women. All dollars generated will be in addition to the existing pledge of each individual given to UWECI. To join Women's Leadership Initiative, a $1,000 investment is asked for both new and existing donors. For members, a step-up option is available. The step-up option is a three-year giving commitment that starts at $500, with the intent of increasing to $750 in year two and $1,000 in year three. All dollars raised in 2006 will be distributed in 2007 and all members will be recognized in leadership giving literature at their highest level of giving.
