Renee was going through a difficult divorce while working full-time and being the sole parent to her 10 year-old-daughter, Sarah, who was diagnosed with physical and emotional disorders. Being a single parent had its own difficulties, but added to Renee’s stress was Sarah’s difficult behavior.
Renee needed emotional support, but most people were unable to cope with her daughter's behavior. This left Renee isolated and unable to find the relief she needed.
The Arc was able to help by providing respite care. Renee was able to get relief from her caregiving duties so she could participate in activities that helped her reduce her stress and focus on self-care. This relief allowed Renee to have some time to herself so that she could better handle Sarah’s behaviors and kept her family intact. Sarah’s behavior also improved. Renee and Sarah have moved from crisis mode to living their lives with diminished stress thanks to the support the Respite program has provided them.
