Volunteer Awards

2016 Outstanding Volunteer Awards

We will announce winners at our Volunteer Awards Event on April 15.

Volunteers are an important foundation of many nonprofit agencies, and bring many skills and resources. Retention of well-trained volunteers increases efficiencies and organizational capacity. To retain volunteers, nonprofits must understand what motivates a volunteer, give them opportunities for personal growth and development, communicate how their work impacts the organization, and recognize their time and talents.

United Way provides local organizations an opportunity to recognize their volunteers through the annual Outstanding Volunteer Awards.

Volunteers are recognized in five categories:

  • Youth
  • Adult
  • Senior
  • Business
  • Group

Guidelines for volunteer nominations:

  • The nominee’s volunteer service must have been performed in United Way of East Central Iowa’s service area (Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Jones, or Linn counties).
  • You may nominate only ONE outstanding volunteer or group per category. You may not enter the same volunteer or group in additional categories.
  • You may submit nominations for each of the five categories. One form must be completed for each category.
  • Nominee’s volunteer organization must be a nonprofit 501(c)(3) and serve the community at large. Religious or professional groups providing services only to their members are not eligible.
  • Volunteer service must be acts for which the nominee did not receive financial compensation. Reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses, such as gasoline, is acceptable.
  • Submitted materials cannot be returned, and through submission, you are giving permission for their future use in promotions or editorials.

Nominations are accepted until February 19, 2016. The United Way William B. Quarton Society committee then chooses three finalists in each category and the community votes for the winning volunteers. Winners in each category receive $500 to donate to a nonprofit of their choice and are announced at our annual Volunteer Recognition Breakfast held on April 15, 2016.  Click here to register for the event.
