United Way 2-1-1 is a free, confidential information and referral helpline and website available 24/7. From homelessness to healthcare, 2-1-1 can help people resolve some of their most pressing challenges and needs.
For more than 20 years, United Ways across the U.S. have supported 2-1-1. This Sunday, February 11, is 2-1-1 Day, which provides an annual opportunity for us to showcase the important work 2-1-1 does in East Central Iowa.
Here are 11 facts for this year’s 2-1-1 Day:
- 2-1-1 recently updated their website. Check out their new look and features by visiting 211iowa.org.
- HACAP employees answer our community’s calls and direct them to the resources they need.
- Every tax season, our local 2-1-1 schedules Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) appointments for individuals and families. This program provides free tax preparation and filing services.
- Regionally, 2-1-1 provides support for 42 counties and 13 United Ways across Nebraska and Iowa.
- Statewide, our local 2-1-1 center is one of five centers in Iowa. A database of resources serves the entire state and establishes network for both directors and contact center managers.
- United Way 2-1-1 works with United Way Worldwide, which covers 93.5% of the United States.
- 2-1-1 has resources from 983 agencies, with 5,663 available services to callers.
- There are several ways to contact 2-1-1: call 2-1-1 from a landline or 319-739-4211 from any phone, text your zip code to 898211, or search their website.
- Callers contact 2-1-1 for a wide variety of reasons including income support, housing, utilities, healthcare, and more.
- In addition to connecting residents to help they need, 2-1-1 supports local disaster planning, response, and recovery. Through floods, windstorms, heatwaves, ice storms, or other disasters, 2-1-1 communicates with community and emergency service providers.
- 2-1-1 can assist non-English speaking callers, too! Get help through a telephone interpreting service with access to 150 languages.
